Aurélie Goyenvalle
Dr Aurélie Goyenvalle is Director of Research at INSERM and Head of the INSERM–UVSQ Research Unit IMPROVE (UMR1357, Innovative Medicine and Physiopathology Research in Neuro-Muscular Disorders, Reproduction and Development) at the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (UVSQ). Her research focuses on the development of innovative gene and oligonucleotide-based therapies for neuromuscular disorders, with a strong emphasis on translational research and clinical application.
She obtained her PhD in Virology from the University of Paris VII in 2006 before joining the University of Oxford as a postdoctoral researcher, where she investigated RNA splicing modulation approaches for neuromuscular and neurodegenerative diseases. In 2012, she was awarded a Chair of Excellence to establish her own research group at UVSQ, dedicated to the development of novel RNA therapeutics. She joined INSERM as a permanent researcher in 2015 (CRCN) and was promoted to Director of Research (DR2) in 2020.
Aurélie Goyenvalle has made significant contributions to the development of antisense oligonucleotide therapies for Duchenne muscular dystrophy and has helped advance innovative RNA-based therapeutic strategies from preclinical research toward clinical translation.
Beyond her scientific achievements, she has played an active role in structuring the European oligonucleotide community. She is a founding member and former Management Committee member of the COST Actions “Networking towards Clinical Application of Antisense-Mediated Exon Skipping” (BM1207) and “Delivery of Antisense RNA Therapeutics” (DARTER, CA17103), which have connected researchers, clinicians and industry stakeholders across Europe. Since 2024, she has served as an elected member of the Board of Directors of the Oligonucleotide Therapeutics Society (OTS).
Her contributions have been recognized through several international distinctions, including the Rosalind Franklin Society Special Award in Science (2024), the Mary Ann Liebert Young Investigator Award (2016), and the Dr Alan M. Gewirtz Memorial Award from the Oligonucleotide Therapeutics Society (2011).
As founding President of the French Society for Therapeutic Oligonucleotides (SFOT), she is committed to strengthening collaborations between academia, healthcare, biotechnology and industry, and to supporting the development of a vibrant national ecosystem for oligonucleotide therapeutics.
